Learning the law

KANGIQTUGAAPIK/CLYDE RIVER - Ruthie Mingeriak has a busy summer ahead of her.

The 17-year-old Clyde River resident has just signed on to a 600-hour summer student program with the RCMP, and she couldn't be happier.

"I think RCMP are cool, and if there was no police there would just be war all the time, I guess," she said. "They asked class to class for those 17 and older who would be interested, and I said, 'Yes, I am.'"

Mingeriak, a Grade 11 student at Quluaq school, will be the first of her family to get involved in the field of law enforcement.

"They're really excited for me," she said.

She made the cut after a formal application and interview process - in which she did quite well, according to local Cpl. Nancy Joyce.

"I need a good experience, and this will be my first job," Mingeriak said.

She will now travel to Iqaluit from June 9 to 13 for a training program, where she will join 21 other summer students from across the territory. This summer she will likely work on a number of community outreach activities. While she's not quite sure what to expect, she said she is staying "open-minded."

Soon after returning to her home community from training, she'll be off on a short adventure for another one of her passions: hip hop.

'"It's busy, but I'm so happy. We'll be going to the regionals in Ottawa for breakdancing," she said.

Mingeriak, whose favourite classes are math and gym, said she keeps herself balanced by occasionally taking breaks when things get too hectic.

And, of course, by spending time with her friends.

"They're excited for me too," she said.
