INUVIK - If you aren't using a car seat for your children, it may be time to take advantage of a great deal.

Northmart and the Inuvik RCMP detachment have partnered up to promote the use of car seats.

Const. Tim Fifield said the initiative is part of a month-long effort to get as many families equipped with adequate car seats as soon as possible.

"We're trying to encourage every parent to install one of these seats," said Fifield.

Every car seat in Northmart has been reduced to 50 per cent off the tag price.

The offer is only in effect for the month of June.

As an added incentive, people who purchase a seat in June will be entered in a draw for $100.

Fifield said it is not only for safety, but it is also the law to have a young child properly fitted and seated into a car seat.

"Failure to do so can lead to a charge of $230," he said.

"That's even if they should be in a seatbelt."

He added that parents should not drive with a child on their lap.

Ideally, said Fifield, children should always sit in the back seat of a vehicle.

"Remember to turn off your air bag if the child needs to be in the front," he said.

Northmart store manager Cliff Stringer said the deal is a great way for parents to acquire a new seat for a discounted price.

"For the month of June only, we're promoting these as half price," said Stringer.

There is only one model of car seat in Northmart.

"Tim came to me and talked about how we need to get everyone wearing their seatbelts, especially the kids," said Stringer.

"Hopefully, there won't be anybody to come in to buy them, because they've all already got a seat," he said.

"If you don't already have one, you can come in and get one."
