YELLOWKNIFE - Police were still awaiting word on the condition of a woman struck by a truck Wednesday morning as of press time.

The woman was crossing the street as the vehicle was making a left turn off of 49 Street onto 51 Avenue at about 8:15 a.m., said Roxanne Dreilich of Yellowknife RCMP's community policing unit.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Stanton Territorial Hospital. A dark-coloured Ford F-350 remained parked in the intersection - a four-way stop - for a few moments after the ambulance departed, its blinker still on with nobody inside.

No charges had been laid as of Wednesday afternoon.

Henry Beaulieu happened upon the scene shortly after the incident. He rushed to the woman's aid as did another man, who pulled a blanket out of his van, according to Beaulieu.

"He was helping keep that lady warm," he said. "You could hear a little bit of moaning (from her), you know, like in pain."

The victim was laying on the corner near the Langlois clothing store.

"I just pray in the name of Jesus that the Lord will heal her," said Beaulieu, who added that he'll also pray for the driver of the vehicle that struck her.

The incident is still under investigation. Dreilich said alcohol was not a factor.

She was unable to provide the victim's age, as the RCMP had not yet confirmed it.
