INUVIK - Al German loves his job as Inuvik's fire chief.

"We've been very fortunate; we don't have trouble recruiting firefighters. Why wouldn't you want to belong to the best organization in town?" he says with a laugh.

After town council recognized his latest 10 years of service with a framed certificate Nov. 14, he didn't stick around too long. Instead, he went back to work.

"Wednesday night is training," he said.

Originally from Churchill, Man., German came to Inuvik on vacation in 1987.

Now 20 years later, he is glad to have settled in this "sunny and gorgeous" community.

As Fire Chief, German oversees the training of 33 volunteer firefighters.

"Training is the most important," he said. "Before you can set foot on the fire truck you have to complete a 40-hour course."

He has also worked with the station's friendly fire dog, F.D, for five years.

German said the dog simply walked into the station and never left. It now makes its home there and rides along on occasion.

"The kids love her," he said.

In his 20 years of service, German said he has seen many volunteer and staff changes.

"You see a lot of people come and go. I've seen seven mayors," he said, adding that long-term staff can be rare in Inuvik.

But thanks to fundraising and the town, he said the fire department has always had good equipment.

For example, the department is getting a new $750,000 truck next year, which will feature the town's 50th anniversary logo.

"In my time here as chief, I got to see the replacement of every piece of equipment," said German proudly.

He also said the department is always looking for volunteers.

It takes a work ethic, some sacrifice, and a desire to help others.

"Anyone with good health, a good mind, and good attitude can be a firefighter," he said.
