Liidlii Kue/Fort Simpson - A few days before the kids hit the streets as ghouls and ghosts, the adults had some fun of their own at the Nahanni Inn's first annual Halloween dance.

More than 100 tricked out pirates, robots and monsters bought tickets for the Friday night event, giving it their all for the costume contest later that night.

That effort went both ways, as organizer Jen Simons and her staff worked hard to ensure the Nahanni Inn took on a distinct haunted-house vibe.

"We've sold 136 tickets and we're at full capacity," said Simon who was decked out as a "princess of darkness."

"We constantly have theme parties," she said, which have included Hawaiian and cowboy themes.

"We're trying to breathe life into this community."

In this case, "life" meant a lot of death, with electric chairs, cobwebs, blacked-out walls and even a "gore" table, covered in dripping, gooey goodness.

"It's amazing what you can do with Spam," Simons said with a laugh.

As the night went on, the Inn filled with freaks of all shapes and sizes.

A pack of werewolves stalked around one table, accompanied by a few other misfits, such as were-tiger Daniele Gregoire. She said she was happy to see a little something out of the ordinary happening in Fort Simpson.

"It pushes people to be creative," she said, "You see another side of these people. It's a fun night."

That other side included a giant Jigsaw of the movie Saw fame, a toga party (prone to shouting "Toga! Toga! Toga!" at random intervals) and a pair of "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots," who kept knocking each others' blocks off throughout the night.

A little later on, another great costume came in - or rolled in, rather.

It was Hannibal Lecter (known to most as Kurt Tsetso) complete with mask, straitjacket and bindings, attached to a wheeled dolly.

"My girlfriend's idea," Tsetso said, after being propped up in a corner of the bar. The offending party was kind enough to feed him a beverage through a straw.

But in the end it paid off, as Tsetso took first place in the single's division of the costume competition. On the group side, the werewolves ran away with first, while the Rock 'em Sock 'em robots took second to cheers, and the expected block-knocking scuffle.
