NUNAVUT - Hamlets throughout Nunavut have wrapped up nominations for the 2007 elections, which are scheduled for Dec. 10.
There are a couple of packed races in Pangnirtung and Sanikiluaq for council, with 13 and 11 candidates respectively.
Kugluktuk, on the other hand, won't be holding elections for council at all - with only four candidates, they were automatically acclaimed.
Arctic Bay Mayor Darlene Willie has stepped aside, and there are five new candidates vying to fill her shoes.
Meanwhile, Mayors Michelle Gillis (Cambridge Bay) and Abraham Kublu (Pond Inlet) have been acclaimed.
Grise Fiord's election has a little twist: two of its four council candidates are also running for mayor.
Whoever wins will leave a hole on council, and someone new will have to be appointed from the community as the final councillor.
In Taloyoak, the deadline has been extended until Nov. 13 for the council candidates.
According to a hamlet worker, the RCMP have not had time to process the criminal background checks necessary for nominations.
