Little sneezing or freezing

Liidlii Kue/Fort Simpson - The final tournament of the year at Seven Spruce Golf Course in Fort Simpson failed to live up to its name.

Temperatures were just below 10 C and a light wind was blowing yellow leaves onto the greens during the Ken Brown Memorial Sneeze and Freeze Tournament on Sept. 22.

The weather wasn't too bad this year, said golfer Darrell Littlechild. Last year there was good weather for the tournament, but the year before was the worst yet with a hard north wind blowing rain on the golfers, he said.

Weather has always been variable for the tournament.

"We've had everything for the Sneeze and Freeze," said Wally Watson, one of this year's organizers.

Conditions for the tournament have ranged from six inches of snow to pouring rain to howling winds to beautiful golfing weather.

In an effort to guarantee some half-decent weather the tournament was moved forward this year from its usual slot in October. Despite the reasonable conditions the tournament had its lowest turnout to date with only 10 golfers picking up their clubs.

"It's to be expected," said Watson.

The fall hunt and other activities have many of the usual golfers occupied, he said. The 10 die-hard golfers still managed to do 18 holes in a two-person, best-ball format.

Teammates for the tournament were a matter of chance with a draw being done from a hat to determine the pairs.

Coming in first with 78 were Owen Rowe and Sheila Pollard. Close behind at 79 were Steve Gooderham and Eric Menicoche. John Moreau and Dave Gargan took third with 83.

Taking second was a matter of making two birdies and staying on the fairway, said Menicoche. A bit of friendly competition didn't hurt either.

"We were cutthroat and vicious," said Menicoche with a smile.
