Inuvik - A few local soccer players want to squeeze in one more soccer experience before the season ends for the year.

Dwight Carpenter is a 15 year-old student at Samuel Hearne. He wants to raise some money to send a team of local soccer players to Hay River for a tournament this month.

Carpenter has been to the annual event, which is the last tournament of the year.

"I went by myself last year, but I want to bring a whole team down," he said.

Carpenter added that when he went last year, he was assigned to another team, because of the absence of Inuvik.

"I've been trying to get a team into this year's event," said Carpenter.

Even though the summer has already been full of travelling, soccer and tournaments, Carpenter wants one last hurrah before putting his shoes away for the winter.

"We're looking for sponsors who could send us down," he said.

"It would be a good experience for us and a good way to end the summer."

Carpenter said that his team of players and supporters have already sent out letters in the community, looking for financial support.

For now, Carpenter and his group of athletes are kicking the ball around town and in the school gym, where the next nine months of soccer will take place.

"We've been playing well as a team and I think we could do well against others," said Carpenter.

"We've been playing together for many years now."

Carpenter said he got his start in grade five, when he joined the SAMS soccer club.

Another player who wants to represent Inuvik against other teams from across the Territories is Lance Gray.

Gray said that he has been involved in the sport for a few years and keeps active to stay healthy.

"It's a fun sport," he said.

"I like the running involved, it keeps you moving."

Gray and Carpenter were a part of the boys team that went to a tournament in New Mexico. The team came home with medals and good spirits.

Gray said that he doesn't know too much about the tournament, but will help fundraise for his team.
