YELLOWKNIFE - Six months after completing a historic mission, the commander of the First Canadian Ranger Patrol Group has been reassigned.

Bergeron is heading back to his native Quebec, where he will serve with the second battalion of the Royal 22nd Regiment in Valcartier.

He'll be training with the battalion and potentially serving in Afghanistan.

Bergeron was part of Operation Nunaliviut, which involved a group of soldiers and Rangers attempting to complete a historic trek that ended in failure in 1906.

They succeeded, and Bergeron said he would always remember the feat.

"Our last patrol we did last year was the most exciting," he said. "When you taste that kind of adventure on patrol you want more."

To his successor, Maj. Luc Chang, Bergeron offered these words: "When you first work with (the Rangers) you fall in love with them. I learned a lot from them and I will keep them in my heart."

Chang said he realizes that being the commanding officer of the First Canadian Rangers is an important role.

"It's going to be a first experience for me. I'll try to carry on the same level of excellence that (Bergeron) had," he said.

Chang most recently served with the Canadian Forces Land Advanced Warfare Centre in Trenton, Ont.

Previously Chang served in Croatia in 1995, Haiti in 1997, Bosnia in 2001 and Afghanistan in 2004.
