Commissioner Tony Whitford and NWT Chief Electoral Officer Saundra Arberry signed the election order in Whitford's office Wednesday.

Arberry said the next step is to deliver the election writ to returning officers Sept. 3, which directs them to open offices in each of the territories' 19 electoral districts.

"In the paper we'll be publishing a list of names and addresses for them on Sept. 3 as well," said Arberry.

Nominations for candidates also officially open on Sept. 3, starting at 10 a.m. and closing Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. The election date is Monday, Oct. 1 - the first set election date in the NWT's history. Elections now take place every four years on the first Monday in October.

Fourteen people have declared their candidacy for Yellowknife's seven electoral districts as of Wednesday.
