Former educator Denise Kurszewski is running for election in Inuvik Twin Lakes, a seat now held by Robert Mcleod.

"I'm interested in running because I've been privileged to have worked here and had many experiences here over the years," said Kurszewski.

"I went on to get my education which has helped me move forward."

Kurszewski said she knows the issues and wants to address them and represent the riding.

"Community wellness and education are important for the community," she said.

She said that the riding needs a strong voice.

"I know I have a strong voice in advocating on behalf of the people," said Kurszewski.

She said this is the first time she has considered running for MLA.

"I haven't run for MLA before, but I have had jobs where I do speak with people and represent them," she said.

It was this year that someone approached her to run for the MLA seat.

"After I was approached about it, I thought it was a good idea and started working towards that goal," she said.

"I think a lot of people already know me, which helps, but I haven't done any active campaigning yet.

"I need to consider the constituents in my riding and what they will respond to."

Meeting with people in their homes is something that Kurszewski wants to focus on.

"I want to reach them on a grassroots level, talking with them, meeting them at home and listening to them," said Kurszewski.

Children, youth, education, wellness and economic development are all issues that she wants to address, if given the opportunity.

"I would work with the other MLA to collaborate to find innovative ideas and creative solutions," she said.

Encouraging youth is important to Kurszewski because she wants the best for the growth of the community.

"I think the youth need a lot of support," she said.

Kurszewski said that she recognized the needs of the younger generation during her time working in the education system.

"Working in the schools showed me that the youth might be coming from a place where they are facing difficulties," she said.

"If we want to take advantage of our education, we need a strong foundation."
