Fort Simpson - Putting together the front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly, five swimmers from Fort Simpson swam their way to glory at the Mackenzie Region Swim Meet.

The village team took third in the pool division at the meet that was held in Fort Smith Aug. 10-11.

"They did well," said Eve Wright, who coached the team together with Ian Dahlman.

Also representing the Deh Cho were the Fort Liard team, who finished fourth in the pool division, and the Fort Providence team, who won the spirit banner for being the most enthusiastic and sportsmanlike competitors.

A total of seven teams competed in the event including teams from Hay River, Whati, Fort Smith and the K'atlodeeche First Nation, said Janie Hobart, who organized the meet.

With 40 swimmers at the meet, attendance was down slightly from an annual average of 50 competitors.

This was the first large event that's been held in the Fort Smith swimming pool, which has only been open for six months.

"It was very, very successful," said Hobart.

Taking first in the pool division was Hay River followed by Fort Smith. In the waterfront division, Whati took first with K'atlodeeche taking second.
