YELLOWKNIFE - A man in RCMP custody June 23 burned his shirt in an attempt to set off the fire alarm in the detachment's cell area, RCMP spokesperson Roxanne Dreilich said.

Dreilich didn't know why the man was in custody. The police file listed the incident as "arson - own property."

Meanwhile, a 20-year-old man reported last Saturday that he was hit in the back with a stick near the Northern Lites Motel.

The victim knew his attacker and provided police with the attacker's name. Police were unable to locate the suspect.

The victim said he was not injured and declined medical attention, said Dreilich.

"The investigation continues," said Dreilich.

Highway crime

A 55-year-old man is accused of assaulting a woman, 46, at his home on Highway 3 outside of Yellowknife last weekend.

The woman received injuries to her face and was treated at Stanton Territorial Hospital.

"The two were involved in a relationship but they did not reside together," said Dreilich, adding that both were drunk at the time of the incident. Charges of assault are pending against the man.

Neighbors help assault victim

A 51-year-old woman sought the help of her neighbors after being hit by a man on Sunday afternoon.

The neighbors called the police, who found a suspect drunk and still in the house, which Dreilich said belonged to the woman.

A 44-year-old man was arrested without incident.

Sticks and stones...

A 36-year-old man went to police to complain his girlfriend, 31, threw rocks at him last weekend, hitting him in the eye and arm.

"The victim doesn't have a permanent home and resides in a tent," where the assault occurred, said Dreilich.
