CHESTERFIELD INLET - Mud was flying in Chesterfield Inlet June 21 as participants raced around an ATV track all with one thought in mind: safety.

ATV Safety Quiz

Q: What do you do if a tire blows out when you're going down the road?
A: Let off the gas, slowly come to a stop and don't brake.

Q: How many people are allowed on an ATV?
A: Two.

Q: What is the maximum speed allowed on an ATV?
A: Under Nunavut law, 50 km/hr. Under Chesterfield Inlet by-law, 15 km/hr.

RCMP organized the event, which was open to anyone over 14 with a helmet. The challenge wasn't just about racing, but to promote ATV safety in the community.

"I saw this as a good way to inform folks in Chesterfield Inlet on safe practices," said RCMP Cpl. Kurt Kamotzki. "We've identified ATV use as one of our priorities in Chesterfield Inlet."

As an ATV instructor with the National Safety Council, Kamotzki has a lot of expertise to pass along to drivers.

In addition to the race, contestants were judged on safety inspections of the ATVs and tests of the riders' safety knowledge.

With their helmets buckled tight, contestants raced around the track to demonstrate their control of the ATV in forward and reverse sections.

Ralph Simik took home first place in the 4x4 class.

"I learned that safety comes first," said Simik who has been driving an ATV for around seven years. He said he picked up a few safety tips, including how to signal turns and stops.

He said that spectators also picked up some knowledge on safety in the safety quiz given out loud to drivers as the audience watched.

RCMP officers handed out safety-themed prizes to go along with the day's event. Simik said he took home a helmet, a pair of gloves, and a $50 gift certificate. The top six contestants also received new helmets and similar safety-related prizes.

Romeo Kuglugiak took home first place for the 2x4 class.
