PAULATUK - Loose dogs in Paulatuk have had a death warrant signed against them after an attack in the community.

A stray dog bit two young girls in Paulatuk July 14, as they were spending time on a playground.

One of the young girls was medevaced to Inuvik and will receive treatment for scratches and bites.

The town's animal control officer has also been authorized to shoot any stray dogs which roam the community.

RCMP Const. Travis Gallant said police have been warning residents to tie up their dogs and posting notices around the hamlet.

"We've been having many problems with stray dogs, and the bylaw officer is patrolling and taking care of the problem," he said.

On July 16, Gallant added one dog had been destroyed, because of its involvement in the attack.

While he could not comment on the case - which is still being investigated - Gallant said the case should remind owners to be responsible.

"We're trying to work with the community to try and find a solution," he said.
