YELLOWKNIFE - A Yellowknife teenager had a close call with a knife-wielding assailant on 50th Avenue last week.

A 24-year-old man was arrested after an 18-year-old man was attacked around 2 a.m. June 1.

Police say the attacker and the victim were walking down the street with three companions when the man, apparently fearing an attack, pulled a knife and attempted to stab the teenager, and inflicted a superficial scratch on his stomach.

Robbery at Northern Lites Motel

A friend and a stranger were a bad mix for one Yellowknife resident at the Northern Lites Motel.

The 38-year-old man was robbed the morning of May 29, after letting a woman and a man into his room at 7 a.m. He knew the woman, but not her male companion.

The man attempted to choke him, then made off with his wallet and room key.

Police arrested the two suspects near Corner Mart. The man, 38, faces robbery charges, while the woman, 22, faces possible charges of possession of property obtained by crime.

Body found, cause of death unknown

Police found the body of a 33-year-old male June 1 behind the Pentacostal Tabernacle on 49th Street.

"It's not considered suspicious," said Const. Roxanne Dreilich. "He was known to have significant medical conditions."

An autopsy was ordered to determine the cause of death.

Assaults in Yellowknife

Police opened 17 assault files this week, two of which resulted in charges.

A 22-year-old woman was assaulted by her 34-year-old boyfriend outside Harley's Bar, May 28.

In another case, a 31-year-old man was charged with assault in a domestic dispute with a 32-year-old woman.

Police rejected four alleged assaults as unfounded; five are still under investigation and in six others, the complainants declined to provide information.

B&E at Extra foods

Police are investigating a smash and grab at the Extra Foods on Old Airport Road May 29.

A thief threw a rock through a window and made off with rolling papers, said Const. Roxanne Dreilich, noting that no cigarettes or cash are left in the smoke shop after closing.

Meat on the lam

Police are also investigating shoplifting of meat from Extra Foods on June 3.
