KIVALLIQ - Kivalliq News was one of the big winners in a regional newspaper competition.
The newspaper earned seven awards recently at the Manitoba Community Newspapers Association annual meeting.
"It's always a nice feeling when the Kivalliq News does well at the annual awards," said Greer. "The people in the Kivalliq are great. There's so many who support what we do in so many ways that we honestly feel they deserve our best effort every week to produce a newspaper they can be proud of.
"There are a number of really solid community newspapers in Manitoba, and I'd be less than honest if I said to know the Kivalliq News is rated among the best of them doesn't make me feel good at the end of the day.
Greer also paid tribute to the work done by associate editor and translator Mikle Langenhan.
"We also owe a debt of thanks to the folks who help process the material every week, especially in photo and production, because their professionalism goes a long way in helping to ensure the Kivalliq News remains something our readers look forward to receiving each and every week."
Kivalliq News finished second overall in its circulation and editor Darrell Greer won first place for best environmental story.
He wrote about avian cholera that killed thousands of ducks near Coral Harbour last year. The newspaper also finished second for best front page, best sports story, spot news photo and best layout and design and third for best editorial page.
"We're pleased to see Darrell's writing and photography skills win recognition," publisher Jack (Sig) Sigvaldason.
"And we're equally pleased with the best all-round award which repesents the efforts of all the people who work on the Kivalliq News."
