RANKIN INLET - The scene at the Tootoos' cabin on a cool Monday night was much like any other.

Caribou were slung out on a few pieces of plywood with meat drying out on the racks.

The fire burned bright as a couple snuggled up on some old couches outside.

Other than her blond hair sticking out from under her toque, country music sensation Kellie Pickler fit well into the family scene.

She wore rubber boots, poked at the fire, and teased her boyfriend, NHLer Jordin Tootoo.

"It's a lot different than where I'm from," said Pickler in a southern draw, that gave her roots away. Originally from North Carolina and now living in Nashville, Tenn., coming up to Rankin Inlet was still a big change for Pickler.

Pickler and Tootoo started dating last January, both living in the same condominium complex. Tootoo dropped off a pair of tickets for Pickler to see him at a hockey game.

Now bringing her to Rankin Inlet, Tootoo hasn't spared her any part of the Northern experience. During her time here, she's driven a Ski-doo, eaten Muktaaq and caribou, enjoyed a tundra bonfire and sported a parka made by Tootoo's sister.

Her favourite thing so far?

"Ketchup chips," joked Pickler at first, saying she plans on bringing home a carton full.

"It's probably the people. I've never felt so welcome as I've been here. It's like you never meet a stranger."

Tootoo's been as happy to have his girlfriend experience the North.

"It's just great to have other people from other parts of the world see the lifestyle of the Inuit and learn what our culture is like," said Tootoo.

He said he loves coming home to see his family, and is always surprised at the community's reaction to him now that he's achieved celebrity status.

"People I've know all my life who used to just call me Jordin now call me by my full name, Jordin Tootoo," he said laughing. "My buddies get a good chuckle out of it."

Rose Tootoo, Jordin's mother, said it's been great to have Pickler visit.

"I'm really glad she experienced this," she said.

Pickler was in Rankin Inlet June 14-21, and will rejoin her summer tour in Grand Junction, Colo., June 22.

Jordin Tootoo also left Rankin Inlet last week.
