YELLOWKNIFE - The lakes are opening up and fishing enthusiasts are getting back out on the water. But what are some of the better lures with which to fill a tackle box?

Mike Williams, a technician at Wolverine Guns and Tackle, explained that the types of fish you're likely to catch now are fairly limited. He shared what he thinks are some of the better lures at the moment.

"There's just grayling and walleye right now pretty much in the (Yellowknife) river," he said.

Williams said MFS lures are popular for grayling, along with Mepps and Panther Martin brands.

Fish are not very active this time of year, he added.

"A good old cisco always works for trout," he said, but added that he puts his faith in a new trout bait - Tomic plugs.

"They're proven and tested by myself," he said.

Williams said a popular bait this year for pike is the Storm WildEye Live Pike. The Storm WildEye line of lures has a variety of soft, plastic fish. Since using live bait is illegal in the territories, these can be used as a substitute.

"They're a wicked pike bait - probably one of the best," said Williams.

The best selling lures at Wolverine for pike, however, are MFS lures, but Williams said pike will bite at pretty much anything now.

"Pike aren't fussy this time of year, the ice being on there, they're hungry."

Tyson MacKeen, who was out recently in the fishing section of Canadian Tire, said the same thing about of jackfish.

"I think jackfish will bite on anything... even your arm," he said.

When asked what's hot in lures, MacKeen pointed to Len Thompson's casting spoon lure, saying "that'll catch a fish anywhere."
