Ice may cause barge shipment delays

INUVIK - This year's barges might be a little later than usual in reaching some NWT communities.

Final acceptance dates for NTCL cargo.

  • Bathurst Inlet, Umingmaktok: July 16
  • Cambridge Bay: July 23
  • Gjoa Haven: July 30
  • Kugluktuk: July 23
  • Paulatuk: July 3
  • Sachs Harbour: June 29
  • Holman June 29
  • Aklavik: June 18, Sept. 14
  • Tuktoyaktuk Sept. 14
  • North Warning sites: June 25
  • Del Kirkby, who is yard foreman for Northern Transportation Company Ltd. (NTCL) in Inuvik, said there are still chunks of ice floating in some waterways, especially outside Inuvik.

If it remains much longer, the ice might cause some ferries to be blocked, and the company would need to wait.

"It's just coming off now," he said on June 13, adding some ferries have also been delayed near Hay River because of ice.

Kirkby provided News/North with the latest dates for cargo to be placed on the barges bound for communities.

He said the shipping barges should arrive shortly thereafter, though this can "always change dramatically, because of the weather."

Kirkby said the delays shouldn't prevent any cargo from arriving at its destination.
