IQALUIT - Iqaluit residents have had a busy week: Alianait, the Nunavut Arts Festival, and last night, the biggest rock show the town has ever seen. A line-up snaked behind the Arctic Winter Games Arena in Iqaluit, as lucky ticket holders were admitted to the White Stripes concert.

Local singer Lucie Idlout kicked off the night with a hard rocking first set. The highlight was a song she dedicated to her mother, who was in the crowd to cheer her on. "E5-770" - title of her debut CD - was a reference to the file numbers once assigned to Inuit by the Canadian government.

The White Stripes kept the crowd moving with their solid, non-stop one and half hour set. They did away with a set list, leaving room for spontaneity and jamming. Meg and Jack White played an encore of three songs, including their hit "Seven Nation Army."

What the arena lacked in numbers, was made up for in energy.

Jack White thanked the town for its warm hospitality, saying they had eaten dinner with elders and tried raw caribou for the first time. The show concluded with Jack waving the Nunavut flag over the crowd.

Earlier that day, the band also entertained students at Nakasuk School.
