INUVIK - For many people on stage April 21, graduating from Aurora College rewarded years of work.

It was also a time long awaited by family members, who came to witness their relatives' proud moment.

Leonard Harry, an elder, who is originally from Aklavik, was smiling ear-to-ear as he watched his niece Dolly Mae Peffer received her Office Administration Certificate.

"Oh yes, you gotta be proud," he said.

Billy Storr, who is also from Aklavik, said he, his wife and their two granddaughters were excited to see his daughter Joyce Storr receive a Recreation Leaders' Diploma.

"It's nice to see it accomplished," he said. "She's always been active in sports so it's a good degree for her."

Before the ceremony, some graduates were seen adjusting their robes and tasseled hats, making sure everything was just right.

"I'm nervous, and excited," said Miranda Pingo, from Inuvik, who received a certificate in Office Administration.

Dorothy Koe, who is from McPherson, received a Traditional Arts Certificate, smiled as her husband and three children watched from the stands.

"It's a good feeling, and it shows they've been there for my support," she said.

In all, as the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex was decorated with tinsel, balloons, and images of traditional drummers and dancers, about 200 assembled guests celebrated the graduates.

Keynote speaker Alestine Andre, who is from Tsiigehtchic, said graduates deserved to be proud of their degrees, and hold the day as a good memory.

"Be assertive, be confident, be positive as you apply your new skills," she said.
