YELLOWKNIFE - During a May 24 meeting, Yellowknife Catholic Schools Superintendent of Business Mike Huvenaars gave parents a preview of the retrofit plans for St. Joseph school.

Construction is expected to begin in February 2008 with an addition to the primary wing, and the construction of a mini-gym next to the entrance and opposite the existing gym.

Retrofitting inside the current primary wing will begin in July 2008, followed by additions to the second storey of the school. With construction intruding into the playground area, the two smaller playgrounds near the road will be unusable.

The good news is St. Joseph students can look forward to $60,000 worth of new playground equipment for next year, said Assistant Principal Gillian Dawe-Taylor. The school board is in negotiations with the city as the park will likely be set up on city property.
