INUVIK - If you're out walking and feel like a bite to eat, Mr. Chips may be just around the corner.

The portable kitchen opened up last month and owner Sandy "Mr. Chips" Turner says the business is doing fine.

"We have plenty of people coming out, but it all depends on the weather," said Turner.

The kitchen, which is a trailer that is pulled into place by Turner, is often located in the Home Hardware parking lot.

The trailer came in town during the Muskrat Jamboree, but Turner waited to open the business.

"There wasn't enough time to prepare for the jamboree and it was too cold," he said.

Turner said the trailer came from Kingston, Ont., which is the only place in Canada that makes the portable kitchens.

In the trailer is a fridge, freezer, cooler, two deep fryers, a broiler and other familiar items that can be found in a restaurant kitchen.

Turner said he wanted the portable trailer because he was looking for something new, yet familiar to him.

"I knew I wanted in the restaurant business again," said the former cook for the Mackenzie Hotel.

"This service might be the most competitive business in town, so I got the trailer," said Turner.

Being portable might give him an advantage over other eateries in town.

"If something is going on in town, we might be able to get closer to the action," he said.

Turner said to start the business, the menu is basic.

"We have the usuals, burgers, hot dogs, corn dogs and handmade french fries," said Turner.

Turner said there is no lack of customers that stop by the trailer and order.

"We're still starting out and have to work on some things, but it's going smoothly," he said.

"It looks like something that will work."

The cooking and heating is done with propane and the electricity in the small trailer comes from a gas generator behind the trailer.

Turner said the hours are from 11:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. but they may change with the customers.

"When it warms up and there are more people wandering around, we will keep it open later in the evening," said Turner.

A location with dry flat ground is something that Turner needed to set up shop.

"I'm here in the Home Hardware parking lot now," he said.

Turner is hoping for a lot of sunshine this season, to help lure customers with the smell of hot burgers.
