IQALUIT - A man surrendered to RCMP Wednesday afternoon after barricading himself with a weapon inside a Cambridge Bay home for most of the day.

At 8 a.m., RCMP blocked three streets in the middle of the hamlet. The armed man was inside a house on Kamotik Street.

"There is a barricaded man with a weapon, and the local detachment has cordoned off the area, and the emergency response teams from Iqaluit and Yellowknife are on the way," said Sgt. Randy Slawson of RCMP's V Division on Wednesday.

As of 2:30 p.m. local time, the schools, day care, Northern Store, Coop and both government buildings were closed.

By 3:30 p.m. local time, the man had given himself up to RCMP after a telephone conversation.

On January 6, an armed man killed three Cambridge residents and wounded two others with a high powered rifle.
