HAY RIVER - A Hay River home was reduced to rubble during an early-morning fire on Good Friday.

Hay River Fire Chief Trent Atwell said the house consisted of a central trailer and several additions.

Except for one addition left standing, the house burned to the ground.

"I'd say it was about a 90 per cent loss," Atwell said.

He add that the still-standing addition, which appears to be a storage area, suffered smoke and fire damage.

The fire also destroyed a nearby shed.

As of April 6, Atwell had no estimate of the total cost of the damage.

Atwell said the one man in the house when the fire started escaped without injury.

The blaze was well underway when firefighters arrived, the fire chief said.

"There was lots of fire, lots of smoke and lots of heat."

It took firefighters up to two hours to get a handle on the fire.

The fire department received the call at about 4:40 a.m. on April 6.

The home was located just off Miron Drive in the Mile 5 area of the community.

Atwell said the cause of the fire had not been determined as of April 6, but it did not appear to be suspicious.

An investigation is being conducted by the fire department and the NWT Fire Marshal's Office.
