AKLAVIK - An Aklavik man with a history of violence and sexual assault has been charged for a violent sexual assault on an 18-year-old girl.
According to court records, Norman Lloyd Kendi, 50, was charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm, carrying a weapon, uttering threats and attempting to forcibly confine a person.
Court documents state the victim was threatened with a bottle.
The arrest was made March 26 after police were contacted by the girl, who reported she had been beaten up and sexually assaulted.
According to an RCMP press release sent to News/North Friday, Kendi was arrested "without incident" and charged with four counts under the criminal code.
Court records show Kendi as a man with a history of violence from the 1990s, with a prior conviction for sexual abuse. In July 1992 and March 1993, he was found guilty of two separate assaults and sentenced to probation.
In 2004, he was sentenced to two years less a day in jail for a sexual assault causing bodily harm. The assault occurred while a child was in the same room.
While little is known about the latest case, Kendi now faces four charges under the criminal code.
The charges were laid March 26, although information about the case was only made public in court documents.
Officers from the Aklavik RCMP could not be reached as of press time for more details on the charges.
The RCMP press release indicated the victim received minor medical treatment after the incident, but was not hospitalized.
A preliminary hearing for Kendi is set for May 23 in Aklavik.
