Tracy Cross Gauthier, the branch president, said she heard of the trivia league from a friend in Yellowknife, where it is played at the Monkey Tree pub.

"I thought it would be a good idea to try it at the Legion in Hay River."

Cross Gauthier described it as an interactive trivia game, with a master of ceremonies and a component of identifying music from a CD.

"It's everything from Greek mythology to sports," she said.

The trivia league is set to start on May 3, and will be held every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Legion for 12 weeks.

"We can accommodate up to 20 teams of five per team," Cross Gauthier said, noting everyone plays at the same time.

If this first try is a success, she hopes the league will return in September.

Anyone 19 years of age or older, not just Legion members, can participate for free.

Cross Gauthier described the trivia game as very competitive, very social and a lot of fun. "Who doesn't love trivia?"

It is part of a North American-wide federation of trivia leagues at participating pubs.

Legion member Gwen Robak is looking forward to the league and plans to take part.

"I think it will be fun," she said. "I like trivia."

Cross Gauthier said the trivia league is part of an effort to raise awareness of the Legion and attract new members.

"What we're trying to do is increase the visibility of the Legion in Hay River," she said. "And provide something new and exciting in Hay River."

Cross Gauthier, who has been president since January, said the league is one of the new things she will try to increase membership.

The Legion will also be bringing back raft races on the Hay River for Canada Day.

"It's all an effort to get people coming into the Legion," she said.

She noted anyone can join the Legion if proposed and seconded by a current member.

Currently, the Hay River Legion has about 300 members.
