YELLOWKNIFE - Police are searching for a driver who took off after hitting a woman Wednesday morning at 56 Street and 52 Avenue.

The woman was attempting to cross 52 Avenue at a marked crosswalk when a vehicle struck her.

There were at least four witnesses to the hit-and-run.

"With the excitement of what happened, their focus was on the victim," said RCMP Const. Roxanne Dreilich.

People said that the driver left before the ambulance arrived.

Police are now seeking assistance in identifying the driver.

The driver is described as a white female around 30 years old, with wavy, dirty blonde hair, driving a newer model of a black car-truck-type hybrid.

The victim spent at least one night at Stanton Territorial Hospital. RCMP did not know the extent of the woman's injuries.

Dreilich said the driver would face a charge of leaving the scene of an accident, and could possibly be charged with dangerous driving.

She said it's too early in the investigation to know for sure.
