FORT SMITH - A well-known Metis politician now has another claim to fame.

Ken Hudson, president of the Fort Smith Metis Council, is a lottery winner.

Ken Hudson is $100,000 richer after winning big in a lottery draw.

Hudson won $100,000 on March 14 by matching six of seven digits in the Extra number draw.

While he is very happy with the win, Hudson said it is not the kind of money that would change a person's life.

"It's not a high amount," he said. "You can't retire on it."

Hudson said, when he gets his money, he'll put it in the bank and then think about what to do with it. He is waiting for a cheque that will amount to $100,010.

"I'll have to consult with some of my rich friends," he joked.

Hudson said he has never won any large amount before. "Not even close."

His biggest previous lottery winning was about $180.

Hudson said it was curious how he came to buy the Lotto 6/49 ticket on which the winning Extra number was printed.

"The Tuesday night before the draw the (6/49) numbers came to me," he said, adding he bought a ticket with those numbers the next day.

It was even more curious that he would think of new numbers because he has played the same numbers for Lotto 6/49 and Western 6/49 for over 10 years.

"I look at it as telling me to buy a ticket," he said.

Hudson thought the 6/49 numbers would be winners and they were. "I checked all the numbers and I won 10 bucks."

He then checked the Extra number, thinking it was great that he matched the last three numbers before noticing he matched six out of seven.

An Extra number is automatically printed on lottery tickets by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, whether a person pays extra for it or not. It is only eligible to win if purchased.

Each Extra number costs $1 per draw.
