PAULATUK - Paulatuk's hamlet council is fast approaching a second deadline to submit an application for a windfall in GNWT grant funding.

In November, the hamlet was granted an extension to submit a proposal for the $450,000 NWT Community Capacity Building Fund, which was originally due

Nov. 1

The hamlet has been planning its multipurpose building and transport system for more than a year. Hamlet mayor Ray Ruben said everything should be completed this time, to meet the extended deadline of March 31.

On March 20, he said plans for the grant were complete, but a formal application to the NWT Ministry of Municipal and Community Affairs was still pending.

However, he said this should be done by March 31.

Ruben also praised the hamlet's recent multipurpose building working group, which agreed on the final details.

"Both parties, the Community Corporation and hamlet, have been presented with the wishes of the working group, both parties have made resolutions accepting the plan. These letters are in MACA's hands," he said, referring to the NWT Department of Municipal and Community Affairs

According to plans, the multipurpose building could create space for offices, an elders' centre, classrooms and a youth centre.

Ruben said it's not sure who would use the office space, but said there are already interested parties in the hamlet.

After two years of planning, he added, he's glad to be moving forward on the project.
