INUVIK - When it comes to small business, federal contracts can often mean a big step towards stability and success.
Yet, many business owners don't know how to pursue the contracts.
"I often get calls from the communities asking why some people get government contracts and others don't," explained Beaufort Delta Economic Development Officer Eugene Rees.
"The truth is, if you don't market yourself, the government has no idea you're out there."
On Feb. 16, Inuvik's Western Arctic Businesses Development Services held a workshop at the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex.
General manager Brent Kay said the day was meant to introduce business owners to the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises, which was recently created at the Federal level.
The new agency will oversee procurement and competition for government contracts.
The talks were lead by Fran Weekes and Janet McLean from the federal Public Works, who have also spoken in Yellowknife and Alberta.
"It's putting a focus on small and medium business and looking at how to improve opportunities," he said.
One business owner looking for contracts was Inuvik's Jeff Otto, whose Delta Meats company is set to expand.
He said he's looking to secure a contract with northern military outposts, to provide country foods such as Muskox.
Also in attendance was Tuktoyaktuk's Economic Development Officer Paul Hussey.
"I'm here on behalf of my clients, to learn more about opportunities," he said.
Inuvik's mayor, Derek Lindsay, introduced the workshop.
