IQALUIT - Council appointed Chris Wilson to helm a Community Emergency Management Committee comprising the mayor, one councillor, the RCMP, Nunavut's emergency measures co-ordinator, a bylaw officer and a member of the fire department.

The city is required to strike the committee under the Civil Emergency Management Act.

Coun. Glenn Williams said the city's existing emergency plan dates back to the 1980s.

Church pitches cross as way to stop suicides

If members of an Iqaluit church get their way a giant cross will soon overlook the city.

The idea, said Jimmy Qaunirq of the St. Jude's Youth Ministry, is to give hope to young people contemplating suicide.

'If we erect a cross on top of a hill it will help people who see it,' he told council.

He could not provide details on where the cross would be located or how big it would be.

Councillors Simon Nattaq and Jimmy Kilabuk endorsed the idea, though Coun. Glenn Williams urged the involvement of the city's engineering department to ensure the cross doesn't blow over in a storm.

Coun. Claude Martel said the city should consult the public before agreeing to the construction of a religious icon.

'Maybe we should ask first,' he said.

Sheutiapik heads to national quiz show

Soon we'll find out how smart Mayor Elisapee Sheutiapik really is.

Sheutiapik is part of a 36-mayor team taking on surgeons, tattoo artists, fitness instructors, millionaires and radio DJs in Test The Nation, a quiz show on CBC television that was scheduled to be broadcast live from Toronto this past Sunday.

Sheutiapik even made the CBC's website for the show. Speaking for Team Mayor, she expressed confidence but said: 'the surgeons pose the biggest challenge.'

Results of the show weren't available before deadline.
