Police Briefs: Man found dead in truck

YELLOWKNIFE - A 52-year-old truck driver from Alberta was found dead in his truck near the entrance to the Tibbitt to Contwoyto winter road at the end of the Ingraham Trail on Feb. 3.

"At this time it doesn't appear that there was anything suspicious," said RCMP Const. Roxanne Dreilich.

The coroner's office suspects it was a heart attack, said Dreilich. The RCMP are still investigating.

No charges in phone harassment

A report of harassing phone calls was dealt with without any charges being laid, said Dreilich.

According to police, a teenaged girl's friends placed a number of calls to the girl's 22-year-old boyfriend to scold him for something he had done. Messages were left on the boyfriend's family's voice mail.

"They were upset with him," said Dreilich.

Everyone involved has now talked it over and agreed that it must stop, she said.

Phones used in two assaults

Eighteen assaults were reported during the past week, including two where telephones were used as a weapon.

Charges were laid in four assaults, according to Dreilich.

In one case, an 87-year-old man was charged with assault against a 57-year-old woman. Police say the woman was hit in the foot with a telephone. She was taken to hospital by ambulance, said Dreilich.

A 47-year-old man was also charged with assault. He is accused of throwing an ashtray and a telephone at a 50-year-old woman's head on Jan. 30. Her injuries were unspecified.

Shoplifters foiled

A 53-year-old man was charged with shoplifting after he attempted to steal seven fur aviator hats from the Weaver and Devore store.

The store owner saw him and called RCMP, said Dreilich.

A 14-year-old male was also charged with shoplifting last week. Police said a clerk in a Centre Square Mall store noticed someone wearing jeans with tags hanging off of them.
