IQALUIT - Miramar Hope Bay Limited - a subsidiary of the Miramar Mining Corporation - has pleaded guilty to spilling 19,000 litres of diesel fuel.

The spill occurred at the company's Windy Lake camp east of the Bathurst Inlet, on June 16, 2004.

In exchange for the guilty plea, four other charges stemming from the incident have been dropped. Sentencing is scheduled for March 12 in Cambridge Bay.

The company is facing a maximum fine of $1 million.

Miramar was charged under the federal Fisheries Act, the Migratory Birds Convention Act, and the Nunavut Waters and Nunavut Surface Rights Tribunal Act.
