Police Briefs: Three false alarms in one night

YELLOWKNIFE - The fire department and RCMP were called out to three separate false alarms on one night last week.

All three alarms went off between 10:15 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., said Const. Roxanne Dreilich of the Yellowknife detachment.

Alarms were screeching at Rockridge Apartments, the Fraser Tower Suite Hotel, and the Yellowknife Inn on Jan. 24, according to Dreilich.

There are no suspects, she said, but RCMP are looking for information.

"It's a big drain on resources to have the fire department racing around the city for false alarms like that," said Const. Dreilich.

Dodgy airline tickets

Yellowknifers going after dirt cheap holidays should take note - sometimes it's worth spending a bit of money.

A Yellowknife resident bought some airline tickets and reported them to RCMP after it turned out they were not valid, said Dreilich.

He had purchased them from a company in central Ontario, said Dreilich, and later discovered he had been defrauded. They were worthless.

"It is a caution that the cheapest is not necessarily the best way to go," said Dreilich.

International assault

Police are looking into a sexual assault on a Yellowknife woman that allegedly occurred in India, said Dreilich.

"Our jurisdiction is generally within Canada," said Dreilich, "but we'll still do an investigation here."

It is unknown at this point where within India the assault is said to have occurred, said Dreilich.

Yet more snowmobiles stolen

"It was a busy week for snowmobile theft," according to Const. Roxanne Dreilich. Twelve more snow machines were stolen between January 14-28, she said. Seven have been recovered so far. "There are no suspects and no witnesses," said Dreilich.
