Working for the elders

CAMBRIDGE BAY - At a long table in the hall of the high school in Cambridge Bay, Lorraine Gordon is helping the elders.

When the Kitikmeot Trade show came to town, she ran a craft table for the senior artists.

Not many people would consider volunteering for seniors a vacation, but Gordon does.

"I live in Rankin Inlet now, but this is my hometown. I came home to visit my big family," said Gordon.

Her father, Peter Avalak Sr., just celebrated his 74th birthday, and she made it home to Cambridge Bay for the event.

"I've been volunteering (to sell art) for the elders at the trade show. It gives me a chance to sell mine too," said Gordon.

She doesn't just sew, she also teaches sewing to youngsters in Rankin Inlet.

"I volunteer with the youth to help pass it on. To really learn, you have to listen to your elders, spend time with the elders, and watch them sew," said Gordon.

While she was enjoying time with her friends and family, the trade show itself was the biggest surprise for Gordon.

"It is my first time here for this, and it is going fabulous," she said.
