Shovelling trespasser nabbed

YELLOWKNIFE - Police received a report of a trespasser on private property last week. The trespasser was known to the woman who reported him, but was not welcome at the woman's house, said Const. Roxanne Dreilich.

When police arrived at about 3:30 a.m., they found a heavily intoxicated man busily shovelling snow on the woman's porch, said Const. Dreilich.

"He was given a ride home," she said.

Stolen car taken for a road trip

A car reported stolen in Yellowknife last week turned up in Edmonton, said Const. Dreilich.

Vehicle thefts are entered into a national computer system. An Edmonton RCMP officer ran the licence plate number through the system and discovered the car had been reported stolen in the NWT, said Const. Dreilich.

A second car reported stolen last week was recovered within city limits.

Don't leave your kids in the car

Police have received several reports of parents leaving their kids in the car while they visit the grocery store, said Const. Dreilich.

"It's a criminal offence," she said. "It doesn't matter if you're running to the store to pick up a jug of milk - you can't leave your children unattended in a vehicle."

In one case it was a baby and a toddler left in a car while the parent bought groceries.

It was reported after the toddler drew attention by honking the horn, running the windshield wipers, and blinking the turn signals off and on, said Const. Dreilich.

The vehicle was running, so "it could easily have been put into drive," said Const. Dreilich.
