YELLOWKNIFE - A bylaw to adopt the Niven Lake Development Scheme 2007, and to change portions of the 2004 Niven Lake Development Scheme, passed first reading at Monday's council meeting.

At a committee meeting on Jan. 15, Coun. Bob Brooks wondered if more medium-sized houses could be included in the plan.

For phase 7, single-family homes, including modular homes, will dominate.

By having lower density, housing Jeffrey Humble, director of planning and development, said the city would be offering more affordable housing.

Meanwhile, the city hosted a polar bear safety night on Thursday.

The Safety in Bear Country Society's lastest video Polar Bear: A Guide to Safety was shown last night at the Price of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.

Society chairman and bear expert Andy McMullen shared information on the making of the video.

Council goals

City council has been discussing its 2007-09 goals and objectives for the past month.

At a committee meeting on Jan. 13, they discussed what they would like to do in the upcoming term.

Coun. Kevin Kennedy said land development, affordable housing and general safety of citizens were high on council's list of priorities.
