Fiddlers go to school

Wrigley (Jan 22/07) - The halls of Chief Julian Yendo school in Wrigley were filled with fiddle music last week.

The Kole Crook Fiddle Association (KCFA) hosted a mini fiddle camp at the school, bringing in instructors Jamie Rokeby-Thomas and Calvin Cairns from British Columbia. From Jan. 9 to 12, students received both private and group lessons.

Since the KCFA was started in January 2002, interest in fiddling has taken off in the community. Out of 30 students at the school, 24 are learning to play the fiddle, said teacher Pamela Waygood.

"It's kind of fun," said John Antoine.

Eight-year-old Antoine started to learn how to play the instrument at the camp.

"I'd like to fiddle around the whole world," Antoine said.

The fiddle camp ended with the students putting on a concert for the community. Extra excitement was added by the presence of a film crew. Fiddlers from Wrigley could appear on television in the future because an independent film crew was following Rokeby-Thomas as part of a documentary on her work.
