Inuvik (Jan 12/07) - A new calendar for elders with tips on how to avoid falls and accidents will also remind them about their friends' birthdays.
The calendar was designed by the department of Health and Social services.
Health promotions officer Lorraine Walton said the idea stemmed from a workshop in October 2006.
"It was a senior's safety conference in Edmonton," said Walton.
"We were brainstorming about what we could do for elders in our area."
In the calendar, each of the months has a simple message from an elder at the long term care ward at Inuvik regional hospital and a tip on how to prevent falls.
"Falling is totally preventable," said Walton.
Walton said the hospital sees elders seriously hurt by falls, which can do a lot of damage to older bones and joints.
"We want them to be cautious and aware," said Walton.
The calendar is aimed at elders in the hospital and those who attend the elder day program.
"It may expand to other communities, but not as of yet," said Walton.
"A calendar for 2008 is already being planned for the hospital."
Physiotherapist Carolyn MacPhail said the calendar is a great way to include elders in teaching others about the importance of fall prevention.
Long term care resident Pierre Benoit said the calendar is a helpful tool in his life.
"I read the calendar, it's nice to see other elders' pictures," said Benoit.
"It's in the words of the elders, which is good for us to understand."
Benoit said he also appreciated the inclusion of accident-prevention tips.
"It makes you think about the tips," said Benoit.
