Police Briefs
One suicidal action a day

Yellowknife (Jan 10/07) - People were taken to hospital on Dec. 31, Jan. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 last week for suicidal inclinations, said Const. Roxanne Dreilich.

"Sometimes the holidays will do that to people," she said. "Some people don't have friends and family. Loneliness can become a bigger factor."

Most times a person has said something about ending their life to a family member, who reports it to police, said Const. Dreilich.

Two were put into hospital voluntarily, the other five had to be arrested, she said.

Snowmobile thefts continue

Eight more snowmobiles were reported stolen this week, said Const. Dreilich. Three youths have been arrested and charged in connection to the thefts.

All three of the youths, all 14-year-old boys, had been suspects for crimes before, though files did not make it clear what crimes they were.

Four snowmobiles were recovered, she said, and two were only attempted theft.

In one case dogs scared off would-be thieves and in the other, a snowmobile owner chased away thieves caught in the act.

Pot in a snowbank

Police recovered two small bags of marijuana in a snowbank this week.

Discovered behind a residence on Williams Ave., the bags contained about 16 grams each.

No charges were laid, said Const. Dreilich, as they could not be connected to anyone specifically.

Not just teens shoplifting

A 68-year-old man was charged with shoplifting in connection with a report of someone trying to steal a baseball cap from HeadGear in Centre Square Mall, said Const. Dreilich.

Charges are also pending against a 37-year-old man who was accused of stealing from the Extra Foods grocery store on Old Airport Road.
