Election time again

Inuvik (Dec 11/06) - Residents of the Beaufort Delta got to choose new councils on Dec. 11, as elections happened throughout the communities.

Results will be available in next week's News/North, but here are the lists of candidates and acclaimed positions.

Sachs Harbour

The community of Sachs Harbour has a new mayor in Robert Eldridge, who was acclaimed to his post.

Eldridge replaces former mayor Andy Carpenter, who retired after serving three terms.

Donna Keogak was also acclaimed to Sachs Harbour's council, though two chairs remain vacant.

Hamlet SAO Raymond Kaslak said there was simply a lack of registered candidates.

"It looks like not too many people were interested," he said.

Kaslak said the hamlet will be looking for new candidates, and should have a council by early January.

Fort McPherson

In Fort McPherson, eleven candidates competed for 7 seats on council.

The hamlet's mayor, Rebecca Blake, and recently appointed councillor Leslie Blake will stay on for another year.

The candidates were James Andre, Philip M Blake, Taig Connell, Peter Firth, Larry Firth, Wayne Greenland, Paul Hanthorn, Hazel Nerysoo, Bill Prodromidis and Richard Wilson.

Tuktoyaktuk

In Tuktoyaktuk, mayor Jackie Jacobson said the new council would have many issues to tackle, such as securing a new water supply, trying to secure the creation of an access road and finding a solution to the community's garbage problem.

The hamlet saw seven people competing for five posts. The candidates were Lorette Elias, Jean Gruben, Maureen Gruben, Merven Gruben, Lena Kotokak, Georgina Jacobson Masuzumi and Jim Stevens.

Aklavik

In Aklavik, the elections saw five people competing for four seats on council.

The candidates were Robert Buckle, Gerome Gordon, Kathy Greenland, Michael McLeod and Don Storr.

HOLMAN

In Holman, mayor Peter Malgokak was reacclaimed and five people competed for four seats.

The candidates were Connie Alanak, Travis Kuptana, Robert Kuptana, Margaret Kanayok and Noah Akhiatak.

Paulatuk

In Paulatuk, seven candidates ran for four seats.

The candidates were Josie Green, Jonah Nakimayak, Albert Ruben Sr., Donna Ruben, Lawrence Ruben, Fred Thrasher and Frances Wolki.

Ray Ruben will also remain as mayor. He won his post by acclamation.
