Youth are suspects in Cam Bay church fire

Cambridge Bay (Oct 09/06) - Two young offenders have been accused of the arson that damaged the stone church in Cambridge Bay in April.

"The investigation has revealed the names of two suspects - age 14 and 15 - and the investigation is continuing," said Sgt. Louis Jenvenne of the Cambridge Bay RCMP. "No charges have been laid. Under the Young Offenders Act, charges are your last option. We are supposed to look at other things for non-violent matters."

Along with solving the crime, police officers are helping clean up the site. They have joined local volunteers in a clean-up effort that is paving the way for a restoration.

"It is going very good, we took the burned stuff out of there and the hamlet supplied some fine sand to cover the floor," said Jenvenne.

The investigation into the fire is still active.

"We have two suspects, and there could be more," he said.
