Norman Wells (Oct 09/06) - The Sahtu Oil, Gas and Mineral Symposium will run through Friday in Norman Wells.

The event is being hosted by the Tulita, Deline and K'asho Got'ine district land corporations.

"We're expecting about 150 delegates," said Tanya McCauley, event co-ordinator. "The hotels and camps are completely sold out and we are still receiving registrations daily," she added.

The conference is taking place at the Dennis Drolet Memorial Hall and the tradeshow is at Mackenzie Mountain school.

"We really want to showcase what the Sahtu has to offer industry," she said. "This event will bring Sahtu beneficiaries together with government and industry representatives."

The event comes at a great time, said Norman Wells Mayor Ann Marie Tout - who also heads Enbridge's Norman Wells pipeline operation.

"I believe this conference is very timely given the increased interest in mineral exploration and the ongoing interest in oil and gas exploration," she said.

In the neighbouring community of Fort Good Hope - part of the K'asho Got'ine district - Chief Ron Pierrot echoed Tout's comments on the building excitement over the region's potential riches.

"There are a lot of companies getting to the point where they are narrowing their mineral imprints," he told News/North.

"Companies like Diamondex, Eagle Plains Resources and Santana Diamonds are getting closer to understanding exactly what they've got in terms of resources."
