Iqaluit (Oct 09/06) - One week remains until voting day for city council and school board trustees.

There seems to be very little door-to-door politicking going on, so Nunavut News/North offered city council candidates the chance to get make their case to voters. Nine contenders are seeking eight available council seats.

Mark Boudreau:

NNSL Photo/graphicTime for a change at City Hall that will lead to stronger leadership and better government to help Iqaluit become a vibrant and sustainable city. We need a flexible and diverse economy, with increases in light industry, commerce, tourism and services. These increases will take Iqaluit in a positive direction, improving our quality of life, and essential services to youth, seniors and those in need who rely on us for comfort and protection.NNSL Photo/graphic

Al Hayward:

NNSL Photo/graphicI'm inspired by the beauty and economic opportunity in Iqaluit. Iqaluit needs to harness the opportunity.NNSL Photo/graphic

Grant Hipfner:

NNSL Photo/graphicBecause I'm a rate-payer I have an interest in how the city budgets and spends their money. I would like to see no new tax increases for the budget. The cleanliness of the city concerns me (as do) general decisions to make Iqaluit a vibrant city.NNSL Photo/graphic

Jimmy Kilabuk (through interpreter Jeanine Nowdluk):

NNSL Photo/graphicOne of the main issues is our main water source... he doesn't think it should be by the houses... it's getting polluted. The other issue is the trash and garbage around Iqaluit. He feels it's a real issue and it could be cleaned up.NNSL Photo/graphic

Jim Little:

NNSL Photo/graphicThe taxpayers need to be able to make the decisions, not southern consultants. The lack of candidates is an indicator of voter apathy. Civic pride is something I want to address.NNSL Photo/graphic

Glenn Williams:

NNSL Photo/graphic(For) the continuation of a bunch of things we've already started. We have a bunch of capital projects we have to finish up. I enjoy the challenge of being on council.NNSL Photo/graphic
