Trout Lake (Oct 27/06) - Acting-chief Dolphus Jumbo said so far, no one is interested in taking over as leader of the Sambaa K'e First Nation in Trout Lake.

Just this month, Dennis Deneron stepped down due to personal reasons, according to the band. Deneron could not be reached for comment.

Jumbo said he wasn't entirely sure why Deneron decided to leave his position as chief, but said Deneron was known for doing good work in the community.

Jumbo said Deneron might have needed to devote some time to himself after a long run as chief.

"Every one of us has to have our own lives," said Jumbo.

As for the election set in November, Jumbo said he would stay on as chief with the band, as long as the community made efforts to support him.

"I'm very concerned about the community," said Jumbo.

Strong leadership is what the community needs right now in the wake of substance abuse problems, the proposed Mackenzie Gas Project, and the continuing negotiations surrounding the Deh Cho process, he said.

The 55-year-old said he will do what he can for the community, but would "prefer to see a younger person take the position."

Jumbo said he is surprised no one has shown interest in leading the band.

The acting chief is involved in the community as the president of the Sambaa K'e Development Corporation.

Jumbo said he would stay on for a few years if needed, but wants to live out his years in a more traditional lifestyle as a harvester.
