Naval officer remembers roots in Inuvik

Inuvik (Oct 13/06) - Before Capt. James Heath was a Canadian naval officer - and one recognized by the Office of the President of the United States, no less - he was a student among many, eating lunch at Samuel Hearne high school, trying to pick a career.

"I did my entire schooling in Inuvik, from Grade 1 to 12," Heath said.

He recalls talking with his father about his 20-year navy career, and eventually deciding to follow in his bootsteps.

Heath said he was a part of Inuvik's Navy Cadets for six years, which started his career as a man in uniform.

He then went from Inuvik to Ontario, joining the Royal Military College and earning a degree in economics and commerce.

After a master's degree from King's College at the University of London, he officially enroled in the navy in 1976.

On Sept. 25 - in the 30th year of his naval service - Heath received the highest honour the United States can give a foreign officer: the Legion of Merit.

He said he's honoured by the commendation, but now it's back to business as usual.

"I had a short trip to Virginia, but it's back to work on Monday," he said, with a laugh.

And while he's sailed a long way, Heath said he's never forgotten about his beginnings in Inuvik.

In fact, he might even visit again.

"I hope to get there next year for Career Day," he said.
