Pot seized at elementary school

Yellowknife (Sep 27/06) - Marijuana was seized at Mildred Hall elementary school on Sept. 22 - a "very small amount," according to RCMP Const. Roxanne Dreilich.

The marijuana was discovered during school hours. The incident was reported to police by school officials. Two to three students were involved, said Dreilich, and they had no prior involvement with police.

The students, aged 11 to 13 are being dealt with by the school, police, and their parents. School and district education officials did not return messages seeking comment.

Teen charged with assault

A female youth was charged Sept. 19 with assaulting a police officer, amongst other charges. Police witnessed the girl strike another youth. When they arrived to investigate, the girl became "extremely aggressive and out of control," according to Dreilich. The youth then kicked a police officer in the chest. The incident took place on 50th Street near the Northern Lites Motel, at around 2 a.m. The youth, 16-years-old, had been previously known to police, said Const. Dreilich.

Attempted break-in at Gold Range

The Gold Range Bistro experienced an attempted break-and-enter around midnight on Sept. 19.

A 21-year-old Yellowknife man was seen trying to break into the restaurant using a power saw.

The owner of the bistro had left the property, but was still in the area and saw the man.

He called the police who arrived while the man was still attempting to saw his way through the outside wall. It was extremely noisy, said Dreilich, and the man was clearly intoxicated. He will appear in court Oct. 24th.

18 people missing this month - police

Yellowknife RCMP Detachment received a total of 449 calls for service from Sept. 8-25. Among them were 18 reports of missing people, 25 assaults, and 57 calls for disturbing the peace. The following statistics were compiled by the RCMP.
