Thirty years and counting

Yellowknife (Sep 20/06) - Not many companies can say they've worked in North for three decades and are still growing.

Nunasi Corporation is one of those few as it recently celebrated its 30th year with an open house at its office in Yellowknife.

The company has businesses throughout the NWT and Nunavut and is involved in more than 40 affiliate and joint-venture companies.

Top of the World Travel has a 17-year relationship with the company, said Susan Mercredi, managing partner with Top of the World.

"It's proven to hold all of the ingredients required to develop a very successful travel and tour agency," she said.

Strong community support and a solid working relationship with Nunasi is helping Top of the World to continue its success, she said.

Working alongside Nunasi's president and chief executive officer, Fred Hunt has also been excellent, said Mercredi.

Hunt, who has been with the company since 1988, said Nunasi has grown in leaps and bounds over the years.

"The changes have been enormous," he said.

Developing business links and expanding in the North have helped the company evolve, he said.

A lot of hard work and dedication have helped the business community across Canada become aware of the Nunasi Corporation, he said.

The availability of tremendous non-renewable resource riches presents ways to maximize opportunities for Nunasi and its affiliates, he said.

"We want to continue to form joint-ventures," he said.

By creating more businesses, the company is building more economic and employment opportunities for its beneficiaries, said Hunt.

"That's what we're all about," he said.

Hunt said he hopes 30 years from now the company will be even larger than its current state.

"This company is going to carry on for a very long, long time."
